Why Many Online Vendors Sell Teak Tables in the Pre-Assembled Form

Nowadays, a considerable percentage of the people who purchase teak furniture do so over the Internet. They do so in pursuit of the cheaper prices and the very considerable convenience that comes with online shopping. And one thing that sometimes amazes them, especially when shopping for items such as teak tables, is the fact that the vendors of such items opt to sell them in the pre-assembled form.

What is meant by ‘pre-assembly’ in this case is a situation where the various parts that go into the making of the tables (the table-top, the ‘legs’ and so on) are pre-carved, made so that the can easily fit into one another, but not joined. The arrangement is usually that the buyer will join the pieces together upon receiving them, to make the complete table. To the non-technical user, this often means employment of a carpenter to do the joinery. Granted, the makers of the furniture will usually present you with all the bits you need to join the furniture items, but what they don’t provide you with is the expertise and tools for the job. There are also many people who, even when armed with the right tools don’t feel confident about their ability to join the tables. So they end up calling the professionals. There are also others who can’t find the time for such ‘low value’ tasks.

Now the question that baffles all those people is as to why the vendors of items such as teak tables have to present them in the pre-assembled form. In other words, the question is as to why these vendors can’t simply sell fully-assembled and ready to use tables. It is a question they pose in appreciation of the considerable cost and inconvenience the pre-assembly system ends up causing them.

So, indeed, why do many online vendors prefer this ‘pre-assembly’ form which is often quite inconveniencing the buyers?

Well, the answer to that question lies in appreciating the shipping logistics, especially the monetary side of them. This is where it turns out that cost of shipping an item is dependant on both its weight and it is size (that is, the amount of space it occupies on the vessel used for shipping). The reasoning for the latter costing element is that a heavy but compact item saves on space, whereas a bulky item (whatever its weight) ends up taking space that would have been used to ship other items. Thus, if such a bulky item has to be shipped, so the reasoning goes, then the cost for shipping it has to be equivalent to that of other items that would have been shipped on the extra space it occupies. Applying this to the teak tables, it turns out that trying to ship them when they are fully assembled would mean their taking lots of space, and hence being more costly to ship. It makes a lot of sense to pre-assemble them, but then ship them in bits and pieces (wherein they take less space); with the buyer joining them into usable form upon delivery. Economically, it is figured that the amount of money saved in terms of shipping costs in that way is much less than what it would cost to join the pieces, even if one were to call an artisan to join them up.
